Plain english

What the NSW Home Energy Saver Loan actually is

The NSW Government has put $480 million behind interest-free loans so households can replace old, expensive appliances with efficient ones. A hot water heat pump is one of the upgrades it covers — and hot water is usually the biggest single slice of a home’s energy bill.

You borrow, you don’t pay interest

Between $2,000 and $15,000 at 0% interest, over a term of up to ten years. No establishment fee, no account-keeping fee, no early-repayment penalty. You repay exactly what you borrowed — nothing more.

Brighte is the lender, not us

The loan is funded by the NSW Government and delivered by Brighte, a licensed credit provider. You apply to Brighte, they assess it, and if approved they pay us directly once the job is done. We never touch your money.

It stacks with the rebate

This is the part most people miss. The government rebate comes off the price first — then you can finance whatever is left. You are not choosing between the rebate and the loan; you can use both.

You need an accredited installer

The programme only funds work done by an installer holding NETCC accreditation — the New Energy Tech Consumer Code. SKICO Plumbing is accredited, so your job qualifies.

The numbers

What the repayments actually look like

At 0% interest the maths is simply the amount divided by the number of months. No compounding, no hidden cost. Here it is laid out.

Rebate + loan

How the rebate and the loan work together

The order matters, and it works in your favour.

1

We quote the job

Supply, install, removal of the old unit, disposal and certification — one fixed price.

2

The rebate comes off

The government incentive is deducted from that price before you pay anything. You never pay it and claim it back.

3

You finance the balance

Whatever is left, you can put on the interest-free loan — if the balance is at least $2,000.

4

Brighte pays us

Once the job is signed off, Brighte pays us directly. You just make the monthly repayments.

Worth knowing: the loan has a $2,000 minimum. On a straightforward electric-to-heat-pump swap the rebate can bring the balance below that, in which case there is nothing to finance — which is a good problem to have. We will tell you honestly which side of that line your job falls on before you apply.

Eligibility

Do you qualify for the NSW Home Energy Saver Loan?

Brighte makes the final call, but here is the criteria as it stands.

You’ll likely qualify if

  • Your household’s combined taxable income is $210,000 or less
  • You own the property — owner-occupier or landlord
  • The property is in New South Wales
  • You’re an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • You meet Brighte’s credit assessment

It won’t cover

  • Properties used as social housing
  • Properties used for short-stay accommodation
  • Work under $2,000 after the rebate
  • Work by an installer without NETCC accreditation

What it can pay for

  • Hot water heat pump
  • Rooftop solar and home batteries
  • Reverse-cycle air conditioning
  • Induction cooktops
  • Insulation and draught-proofing
  • EV chargers, switchboard upgrades
Where the saving is

Why hot water is the upgrade to spend it on

If you only use the loan for one thing, hot water is usually the one that pays you back fastest.

It’s the biggest slice

Hot water is typically the single largest energy use in an Australian home — ahead of heating, cooling and cooking.

A quarter of the electricity

A heat pump moves heat from the air rather than generating it, so it uses roughly a quarter of what a standard electric tank does.

It runs every day

Unlike air conditioning, hot water is used all year round. The saving doesn’t wait for summer.

The rebate is biggest here

Electric-to-heat-pump changeovers attract the largest hot water incentive, so less is left to finance in the first place.

Questions

NSW Home Energy Saver Loan — your questions answered

Is a hot water heat pump eligible for the NSW Home Energy Saver Loan?
Yes. Hot water heat pumps are on the programme’s list of approved upgrades, alongside solar, batteries, reverse-cycle air conditioning, induction cooktops, insulation and EV chargers. It has to be installed by an accredited installer — which we are.
How much can I borrow, and what does it cost me?
Between $2,000 and $15,000 at 0% interest over a term of up to ten years. There is no establishment fee and no account-keeping fee, so you repay exactly what you borrowed. Brighte does charge a late payment fee if you miss a repayment.
Can I use the loan and the government rebate together?
Yes, and you should. The rebate is applied to the price of the job first, then the remaining balance is what you finance. They are two separate things and using one doesn’t disqualify you from the other.
What is the income limit?
Your household’s combined taxable income needs to be $210,000 a year or less. There are also separate, larger discounts available to households earning under $80,000 or holding an eligible concession card.
Can landlords use it, or only owner-occupiers?
Both. You need to own the property, but you don’t need to live in it. Properties used for social housing or short-stay accommodation are excluded.
I’m renting — can I get it?
Not in your own name, because the loan is tied to property ownership. Your landlord can apply for it though, and a heat pump lowers the running costs you pay — so it’s worth raising with them. We’re happy to quote directly to an owner or agent.
Who actually lends the money?
Brighte, a licensed credit provider, using NSW Government funding. SKICO Plumbing is not the lender and doesn’t profit from the finance. We install the system; Brighte handles the loan and pays us once the work is complete.
What is NETCC accreditation and why does it matter?
The New Energy Tech Consumer Code is a national consumer-protection standard covering honest sales conduct and installation quality. The programme will only fund work by accredited installers. SKICO Plumbing holds it, so your job qualifies — if another quote is cheaper, check whether that installer is accredited, because if they aren’t you can’t use the loan.
How long does approval take?
Brighte’s application is done online and approval is usually quick, but the timing is theirs, not ours. We’ll give you your fixed price first so you know exactly what you’re applying for.
Can I pay it off early?
Yes. There is no early repayment penalty, so paying it out sooner costs you nothing extra.
What if my job comes to less than $2,000 after the rebate?
Then there’s nothing to finance — the loan has a $2,000 minimum. On a lot of straightforward changeovers the rebate does most of the heavy lifting. We’ll tell you which side of that line you’re on before you go through an application.
Do you handle the paperwork?
We handle the rebate paperwork and we give you everything you need for the Brighte application — the itemised quote, the equipment details and our accreditation. The loan application itself has to be submitted by you, since it’s your finance.

Programme details above are current as at September 2026 and are set by the NSW Government and Brighte, not by us — they can change. Nothing on this page is financial advice or an offer of credit. Check your own eligibility at energy.nsw.gov.au and brighte.com.au.
